Greek-Style Turkey Burger with Tzatziki and Feta

A few weeks ago the team at Yoplait invited me to try their Nonfat Greek Yogurt and share my thoughts. I love Greek yogurt and use it in many recipes, so I was happy to accept—this was my first time trying Yoplait’s Greek offering.

After buying a few containers, I headed to the kitchen to make a Greek turkey burger with homemade tzatziki sauce. I’m a big fan of both burgers and Greek flavors, so combining them felt like a natural choice.

I adapted the original recipe to make it lighter and more diet-friendly. The results were delicious: these low-calorie turkey burgers stay flavorful thanks to crumbled feta and a bright, tangy tzatziki, yet remain sensible for anyone watching points or calories.

Ingredients

Servings:
4 burgers
Tzatziki Sauce:

  • 6 oz fat free plain yogurt
  • ¼ cup cucumber, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons red onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ¼ tsp salt
Burgers:

  • 1 lb lean ground turkey
  • 4 oz fat free feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 cup red onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 sandwich thins (multigrain)
  • 1 medium tomato, thinly sliced
  • Fresh lettuce leaves

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup yogurt with the remaining sauce ingredients. Refrigerate until serving.
  2. Heat a gas or charcoal grill to medium.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine all burger ingredients and the remaining yogurt. Shape into 4 patties about 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Place patties on the grill over medium heat. Cover and cook 8–10 minutes, turning once after about 5 minutes, until an instant-read thermometer reads 160°F in the center.
  5. Serve the burgers on the sandwich thins with tomato slices and a spoonful of tzatziki.
  6. To broil instead of grilling: broil patties about 6 inches from the heat for 4 minutes, turn, then broil 6–8 minutes longer or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F.
  7. Assemble each sandwich with a patty, about 1 tablespoon tzatziki, tomato slices, and fresh lettuce.

Gas or charcoal grill
