A Steakhouse-Worthy Recipe You Can Make at Home

When you want a big, satisfying steak, this recipe delivers. Caramelized onions are a favorite topping, but this onion sauce takes them a step further. The onions are cooked low and slow until sweet and golden, then finished with white wine and cream to create a silky sauce that complements any cut of beef.

The extra steps are worth it: the wine adds brightness, the cream adds richness, and the long, gentle cooking develops a deep, sweet onion flavor that turns an ordinary steak into something special.

How to Make the Onion Sauce

Begin by slowly cooking a generous amount of sliced onions in a large skillet with butter, thyme, and a bay leaf. Using a wide skillet helps the onions brown more evenly and reduces cooking time.

After about 25–30 minutes the onions will be soft, sweet, and deeply browned—perfectly caramelized and full of flavor.

Deglaze the pan with white wine, then add beef broth and cream. Stir, remove the bay leaf, cover, and keep the sauce warm while you grill the steaks. Though strip steaks are used here, this sauce pairs beautifully with flank, skirt, sirloin, or filet mignon.

Strip Steak with Onion Sauce

  • Author: Dan
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 30 minutes
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

This strip steak recipe highlights a sweet, creamy onion sauce that elevates the meat. The same sauce works well on chicken, pork, or burgers.

Ingredients

  • 2 (10–12 oz.) strip steaks
  • 4½–5 cups sliced onions (about 5 large onions)
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon chopped thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup white wine
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Start the onion sauce: melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions, bay leaf, and thyme; stir to coat. Cook, stirring often, 25–30 minutes until onions are soft and brown.
  3. Deglaze with white wine and cook until the wine is mostly reduced, about 3 minutes. Add beef broth and cream, stir, remove the bay leaf, turn off the heat, and keep warm.
  4. Season steaks generously with salt and pepper. Grill over medium-high heat.
  5. Grill 6–7 minutes per side for medium-rare, adding time per side for desired doneness.
  6. Remove steaks from the grill and let rest, tented with foil, for 5 minutes.
  7. Slice steaks into thick pieces and spoon the warm onion sauce over the top to serve.

Recipe Notes

  • Any steak cut works well—filet, flank, skirt, or sirloin. The onion sauce is also excellent over chicken or pork chops.
