This is the best blue cheese dressing you’ll make at home: creamy, thick and studded with plenty of blue cheese crumbles. Quick and easy to prepare, this chunky blue cheese dressing is perfect on salads, as a crudité dip, and it’s an ideal companion for wings.

Some people are surprised I make my own salad dressings. I never keep bottled dressings in my kitchen because homemade dressings take about five minutes and taste far better than store-bought versions.
From bright vinaigrettes to rich creamy dressings, making dressings at home is simple. This chunky blue cheese version is one of my favorites: straightforward, flavorful and full of texture.
This dressing brings back memories of my grandfather—he loved blue cheese, and my grandmother always crumbled the cheese off the wedge when she made it. While this isn’t exactly her recipe, it’s close enough that I think she’d approve. Give it a try and you might be surprised how much better fresh dressing tastes.
Ingredients for homemade blue cheese dressing
- Sour cream: I use full-fat for richness, but low-fat or non-fat will work to reduce calories.
- Mayonnaise: A neutral, creamy base—Duke’s or Hellman’s are good choices.
- Garlic powder
- White pepper
- Worcestershire sauce
- Fresh lemon juice
- Blue cheese crumbles
- Fresh parsley, chopped

Seasonings
Keep the seasoning simple so the blue cheese flavor remains the star. I use Worcestershire sauce, white pepper, lemon juice and garlic powder. I prefer garlic powder over fresh garlic here because it’s milder and won’t compete with the tang of the blue cheese.

How to make the dressing thicker or thinner
This recipe intentionally omits buttermilk so the dressing stays thick and creamy. If you prefer a thinner consistency, stir in a few tablespoons of buttermilk until you reach the desired pourability.
If you make the dressing right before serving, it will have a luscious, spoonable texture. Refrigerating it for a few hours or overnight will thicken it further and help the flavors meld—perfect for dipping wings or vegetables.

Final touches
Of course, blue cheese is essential. Use crumbled blue cheese or crumble a wedge of Maytag, Stilton, Gorgonzola or Roquefort into the dressing for the texture and tang you want.
A little freshly chopped parsley brightens the flavor and adds color. This blue cheese dressing comes together in about five minutes and easily outshines store-bought options.
