The Importance of Setting Boundaries

In my Core 4, the pillar is called Recharge Your Energy rather than simply “Sleep More” for a reason. Sleep is crucial and one of the major tools I used to reclaim my life, but it’s not the only method for managing energy. Energy management includes emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical recovery—sleep alone won’t cover everything.

Think of energy like a bank account. You can make deposits at night through good sleep, but if you keep withdrawing all day without protecting your reserves, you’ll run a deficit. Daily choices, how you structure your time, and whether you protect personal boundaries determine whether your energy balance stays healthy.

We’re not machines that only recharge while asleep. We recover throughout the day when we check in with ourselves, downshift when needed, and create intentional pauses. Without those practices, even excellent sleep can be undermined by chronic daytime depletion.

Many of you tell me you’re exhausted by the constant busy-ness. You don’t have enough time for yourself, you feel stuck on a hamster wheel, and setting boundaries is a struggle. That’s common—and solvable.

If you identify as an Obliger (see Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies), boundary-setting can feel especially difficult because Obligers tend to prioritize others’ expectations over their own needs. I’m not an Obliger, but I’ve wrestled with boundary issues too. I’m a recovering perfectionist, and it took a long time and consistent practice to choose self-care over people-pleasing. The change is possible—what about your experience?
