Great Eats in Des Moines
My family and I recently spent a weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, as guests of Catch Des Moines. We explored the city’s food scene, visited the Downtown Farmers’ Market, reconnected with friends and family, and toured the beautiful Botanical Garden. Des Moines has a welcoming Midwestern charm and a surprising number of standout restaurants—this trip only scratched the surface.
We managed to sample a variety of spots during our short stay. Below are the restaurants and treats we enjoyed, along with a few tips for future visits.
Zombie Burger

Our first stop was Zombie Burger, famous for whimsical decor, inventive burgers, and indulgent milkshakes. After a long drive from Madison, we were ready for a hearty meal. I ordered the Raygun—a loaded burger with Monterey jack, fried jalapeños, caramelized onions, bacon, guacamole, and chipotle mayo—and it did not disappoint. We also shared an excellent poutine. If you’re in the mood for a fun, greasy, flavorful burger, this is the place.
Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel

We stayed at the Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel and booked a top-floor suite with two bedrooms, a living area, dining table, and a small kitchen space—plenty of room for a family. It’s a family-friendly option, though note there’s no pool if you’re traveling with kids.
Centro

For dinner, we visited Centro. We were still full from lunch, so we shared the pasta special and a salad. The food was excellent and the staff was attentive—definitely a restaurant worth returning to for a full dining experience when you’re not already stuffed from earlier meals.
Crème Cupcake

Before heading back to the hotel we treated ourselves to dessert at Crème Cupcake. The shop was busy—no surprise, since it’s been featured on Cupcake Wars—but we found a table and enjoyed a couple of cupcakes and chocolate truffles. They offer vegan and gluten-free options, which made it easy for everyone to find something they liked.
Java Joe’s

Every morning I walked to Java Joe’s for coffee. It’s a cozy spot just minutes from the hotel and also serves donuts—perfect for a quick breakfast or to-go pick-me-up before a busy day.
Downtown Farmers’ Market

The Downtown Farmers’ Market was lively and full of fresh produce, prepared foods, and local vendors. I loved the energy and the variety. One standout was Farm Boys Hearty Food Company’s breakfast burrito, which drew a long line for good reason. I also sampled stuffed cabbage rolls and Thelma’s ice cream sandwiches—delicious and satisfying while strolling the stalls.
Wasabi Tao

Fong’s Pizza—highly recommended by locals—was unfortunately closed due to a nearby apartment fire during our visit. Instead we tried Wasabi Tao, conveniently located next to the farmers’ market. The sushi was fresh and well-made, and the staff was friendly. They even helped keep our ice cream sandwiches frozen while we finished our meal.
HoQ Table

One of the highlights of our trip was dinner at HoQ Table with my sister’s family. The Cod Brandade—crispy cod beignets with tomato sauce and salsa verde—was memorable, and we ordered a wide selection of dishes to sample many flavors. The Fried Asparagus Salad (wonton-wrapped fried asparagus, local greens, creamy dressing, and shaved cheese) was another favorite. The menu offers creative, well-executed plates; we left eager to return.
Eatery A

We wrapped up our culinary tour with brunch at Eatery A on Father’s Day. I had Adobo Fried Chicken with a buttermilk waffle—absolutely delicious. Others in our group enjoyed Mustard Braised Pork Shoulder, Shrimp with creamy polenta, Wild Crab Benedict, and Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. The brunch menu is inventive and satisfying—great for families and special occasions alike.
Des Moines Botanical Garden

Before heading home we visited the Des Moines Botanical Garden. The gardens are large and beautifully maintained, showcasing diverse plant collections, themed displays, and peaceful walking areas—an excellent way to end the weekend.
Our weekend in Des Moines was full of delicious meals, friendly service, and pleasant surprises. We’ll definitely return—Fong’s Pizza is already on the list for next time. If you’ve visited Des Moines, where did you eat? I’m always looking for new recommendations.
