Why Prioritizing Adrenal Health Matters for Energy and Stress Management

If you lead a busy life, caring for your adrenal glands should be a priority. Adrenal fatigue is increasingly common in our fast-paced, always-on world. These small glands, positioned above the kidneys, can become just as worn out as we do when we constantly push ourselves without adequate rest.

About a year and a half ago I was diagnosed with stage 3 adrenal fatigue, which came alongside several autoimmune conditions I’d already been managing. Looking back, it’s clearer how the different pieces of my health journey fit together: I was driving myself too hard and ignoring the signals my body was sending.

The encouraging news is that adrenal function can often improve with intentional self-care. With consistent rest, good nutrition, stress management and gentle lifestyle changes, your adrenals can recover and return to healthier function.

So what exactly are our adrenal glands?

Adrenal glands are part of the endocrine system and play a central role in regulating the body’s stress response through hormone production. They also support immune system health and influence thyroid function. When we’re under chronic stress, adrenal performance can decline, impairing their ability to regulate hormones effectively.

Common symptoms of adrenal fatigue

  • Tiredness and persistent exhaustion
  • Dark circles beneath the eyes
  • Strong cravings for salt, sugar or carbohydrates
  • Low tolerance for stress
  • Low blood pressure
  • Poor response to thyroid hormone
  • Frequent or prolonged infections (bacterial, viral, fungal)
  • Dizziness or light-headedness when standing
  • Low blood sugar episodes
  • Sensitivity to light or difficulty seeing at night
  • Signs of premature aging
  • Increased intolerance to alcohol
  • Reduced libido
  • Dry or unhealthy-looking skin

Natural ways to support your adrenals

  1. Prioritize restful, restorative sleep. Aim for at least eight hours nightly and establish a calming bedtime routine to support recovery.
  2. Eliminate foods that burden adrenal function, such as refined sugar, processed carbohydrates and junk food.
  3. Cut back on coffee and increase water intake to support hydration and balanced energy levels.
  4. Choose whole, nutrient-dense foods with plenty of vegetables and leafy greens to supply vitamins and minerals essential for adrenal health.
  5. Favor restorative movement—yoga, pilates, tai chi—and incorporate deep-breathing practices to reduce sympathetic nervous system overdrive.
  6. Carve out quiet daily time for meditation, journaling or gentle reflection to lower stress and promote resilience.

As your adrenals recover, you’ll likely notice more consistent energy, deeper restful sleep and clearer mental focus. Small improvements in mood and a renewed sense of vitality—what I call the “spring in your step”—are also common and meaningful signs of progress.
